LT Michael Sracic, MD, MC, USN

LT Michael K. Sracic, MD describes caring for wounded soldiers during his orthopaedics internship at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Md., as a privilege. “Honor, courage and commitment do not end on the battlefield, and watching these values exemplified during recovery and rehabilitation is an incredible experience as a physician and as a military officer,” says Dr. Sracic, who will deploy to Afghanistan in September 2010. He believes further scientific research is critical, as advances in tactical medicine are saving lives and limbs on the battlefield every day. “Our wounded warriors deserve the best treatment possible, and research and continued education and training provide that opportunity,” he says.

The eyes of this Marine capture an emotion Dr. Sracic sees all too often in the eyes of patients who have witnessed the death of a close friend in combat. “The blue theme represents the strong sadness and emotional haze of wishing it were only a dream,” he says.
